Honouring the Legacy of Keith: A Journey Through Martial Arts and Qigong

In memory of my teacher Sifu Keith Fensom, whose passion for martial arts and dedication to Tai Chi and Qigong left an indelible mark on the lives of many. Keith’s story is one of commitment, resilience, and a lifelong pursuit of physical and spiritual well-being.

Keith

Early Years in Martial Arts:
Over 45 years ago, Keith embarked on his martial arts journey as a student of Shotokan Karate under Sensei Paul Perry at Jin Sei Kai – Kanazawa Ryu. His dedication led him to attend workshops by the late Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa, a 10th Dan black belt. Keith continued his training under Sensei John Van Weeden at TASK (Traditional Association of Shotokan Karate), demonstrating a steadfast commitment to mastering his craft.

Transition to Tai Chi:
After a brief hiatus from martial arts, Keith’s path took a new direction in 1999 when a good friend introduced him to Tai Chi Master Madame Rose Li. Keith joined her Tai Chi Club in London, where he attended classes and workshops, immersing himself in the ancient art. Miss Li’s lineage is traced back to her training at the renowned Fire God Temple in Beijing, China.

Exploring Qigong with Ru-Chi Academy:
In his quest for personal growth and self-healing, Keith sought a local club and found the Ru-Chi Academy in Aylesbury, led by Grand Master Rudie Bynoe. This marked the beginning of Keith’s exploration into Qigong, a system of healing and self-healing. Under Grand Master Bynoe’s guidance, Keith deepened his understanding of this ancient practice.

Chen Style Tai Chi Mastery:
Keith’s Tai Chi journey reached new heights when he started training under the tutelage of Master Wang Hai Jun. As an official lineage holder of Chen Style Tai Chi (12th Generation), Master Wang Hai Jun played a pivotal role in shaping Keith’s Tai Chi expertise.

Qigong Expertise:
Keith’s commitment extended to becoming a member and authorized instructor of the British Health Qigong Association, overseen by Masters Faye and Tary Yip. He also shared his knowledge by teaching various Qigong forms and exercises, including Ba Duan Jin, Shibashi, Daoyin Yangsheng Gong 12 Fa, Taiji Yangsheng Zhang, Yi Jin Jing, Zhan Zhuang, Microcosmic Orbit, Silk Reeling, and various meditation practices.

Legacy and Fond Remembrances:
Sadly, Keith passed away in July 2023, leaving behind a legacy that will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and students. His impact on the martial arts and Qigong communities serves as an inspiration for all who had the privilege of training with him.

Keith’s journey through martial arts, Tai Chi, and Qigong reflects a life dedicated to continuous learning, self-discovery, and the pursuit of well-being. As we honour his legacy, let us remember the passion and commitment that defined Keith’s martial arts and Qigong journey, leaving an enduring mark on those fortunate enough to have shared in his wisdom.
